With the downloaded version, we're not willing to pay Intuit's fee for the state e-filing - I always print and mail the state return - but at least the total cost is known upfront. I ended up feeling like the final price at the time of filing was a complete crap shoot, no matter what price had been advertised when I began my return. This is exactly the feeling that caused me to stop using TT's online version. But it did feel like they were hiding it. But now I know, and I may choose to do it again just for the convenience factor. I was happy with TT until that moment, and I felt it was a little nasty. I just was not mentally prepared to have to pay more at that moment! I did not expect that at all. It was very convenient to just e-file it. It does seem a little like they are hiding the fact that you need to pay additional for e-filing. Once I had everything set up in TT, it was easier to just e-file through that, even though I also did mock-ups on paper and on Federal Freefile Fillable. It was my first time using TT, and altogether it was a smooth experience. I've always done my returns on paper, but since 2019 Federal 1040 took forever to process, I went to e-file for my 2020 Federal taxes and used Federal Freefile Fillable Forms.įor 2021, I wanted to try TT to see how it handled tax-exempt interest and some other things. Last year I bought TT Deluxe Federal + State (Software Download) on on Amazon for $39.99 with the $10 Amazon gift card, for a total of $31.97. I can definitely understand it being off-putting to have to pay $25 to eFile State when there are 5 eFiles of Fed included with the purchase.
For me, it is worth the extra $8 to get Fed + State, even if I am to print out State (I still eFile Fed).

Since I already do a paper return as part of my preparation, for me there's not much point in buying the State portion of the software if they're just going to ALSO tack on another fee to actually file it. I certainly could have printed out the return and mailed it, but it was late at night, and everything was set to go, so I decided to just do it.īut it felt misleading to buy something that said, "+ State" but. I paid it, but I felt kind of ripped off. However, I was very surprised to find a $25 fee to e-file the 2021 State return. I figured I would just use it for my State return too, since I was already there.
